Crab Island, Destin: The Complete Boater's Guide
How to get to Crab Island in Destin, Florida by boat: where it is, launch ramps, tides, anchoring, the Okaloosa County and National Park rules, and safety tips.
Crab Island is a large submerged sandbar in Choctawhatchee Bay, north of the Destin Bridge in Destin, Florida. The National Park Service describes it as part of Gulf Islands National Seashore, and you reach it only by boat. Launch at a Destin ramp or marina, run north under the bridge at no-wake speed, anchor in water you have checked, and follow the county and park rules, which are shared between Okaloosa County and the Park Service.
This guide covers where Crab Island is, how to get there from the ramps, what the tide does, how to anchor, which rules we could confirm and how to stay safe. Where we could not confirm a rule from an official source, we say so and name who to call.
Where Crab Island is
The Park Service calls Crab Island "a large submerged sandbar within Gulf Islands National Seashore," north of the Destin Bridge in Choctawhatchee Bay. East Pass, the inlet to the Gulf of Mexico, lies just to the south, so the sandbar sits on the bay side, away from open Gulf swell. The same Park Service notice says hundreds of boaters congregate there daily in summer. Our Destin deep sea fishing guide covers the Gulf side of the pass.
The submerged land is under shared jurisdiction, so both Okaloosa County and the National Park Service have a role. For private boaters, the practical result is that county ordinances, Florida boating law and park rules can all apply.
Getting there: ramps and marinas
Marinalo's Destin page (October 2026, from the FWC Florida Boat Ramp Inventory) lists two ramps in the city:
| Ramp | Water | Fee | Lanes | Trailer spaces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Destin Marina | Choctawhatchee Bay | $30 | 1 | 20 |
| Joe's Bayou Boat Launch | Choctawhatchee Bay (Joe's Bayou) | $25 | 5 | 55 |
Across the whole bay, Marinalo counts 36 public ramps and launches on Choctawhatchee Bay (27 ramps and 9 paddle launches, 23 of them free, with 280 trailer spaces in total). Free or cheaper ramps farther along the bay mean a longer run, and on summer weekends parking fills early wherever you launch. See the full boat ramps in Destin list and the state-wide Florida boat ramps directory. Fees change, so confirm before you tow in.
Many visitors rent boats rather than bring their own. If you do, ask the rental company about the route, the no-wake areas and what is expected of you; the rental does not change the rules that apply to the operator. Read do you need a license to drive a boat and the Marinalo Florida boating license and registration page for the education rule.
Tides and water depth
Tides in this part of the Panhandle are small. On the day we checked (October 17, 2026) Marinalo's Destin tide chart, built from NOAA tide offsets, showed a range of 0.7 ft between high and low water. The page is not for navigation. With so little tidal range, wind and the current moving through East Pass and the bridge area often matter as much as the predicted tide.
You may read that the water is clearest on an incoming tide. We could not find an official source stating this, so we do not present it as fact; if clarity matters to you, watch the water, not the chart, and avoid days of strong onshore wind or heavy rain, when the bay turns murky. To learn how to read a tide table, see how to read a tide chart and ebb, flood and slack tide. The general principles of shallow sandbars are in our sandbar boating guide.
Anchoring at the sandbar
Crowded sandbars are mostly a matter of manners and seamanship:
- Check the depth before you anchor. Idle in slowly, tilt or trim the engine up as far as is safe and have a person at the bow watching the bottom. Shoal areas shift.
- Do not block a channel or other boats. Florida law (s. 327.44) forbids anchoring or mooring a vessel in a way that unreasonably or unnecessarily creates a navigational hazard or interferes with another vessel, and it allows officers to move such a vessel at the owner's cost.
- Leave room to swing on the anchor line, and expect the wind or current to turn boats. If boats are rafted close together, use fenders; see boat fenders and boat anchor types.
- Keep your engine off and stay clear of swimmers. Do not run an engine while anyone is in the water near your boat.
We did not find an official source for a rule on overnight anchoring by private recreational boats at Crab Island. Ask Okaloosa County or the Gulf Islands National Seashore before planning an overnight stay.
Rules we could confirm
Okaloosa County's waterway safety page lists the Crab Island ordinances. Here is what it says:
- Ordinance 18-19 is titled "Prohibition on the Consumption of Alcoholic beverages and anchoring/mooring of floating structures." The county page also says the 2018 ordinance authorized commercial operations in the area under certain conditions, and that it was updated by Ordinance 20-03 (the Crab Island Entertainment area). News coverage when it passed described it as aimed at floating bars and structures rather than at private boaters, but read the ordinance text for exactly what applies to you.
- Business permits: the county says permits or authorizations must be obtained from both Okaloosa County and the National Park Service. The Park Service began issuing Commercial Use Authorizations for Crab Island businesses for the 2019 season, and operators also need a county permit.
- Other restricted areas: Ordinance 19-06 covers restricted areas for Destin Harbor, East Pass and Sandpiper Cove, and Ordinance 15-14 creates a vessel exclusion zone for emergency vehicles.
- Status check: a May 2025 county notice proposed repealing sections 19-76 through 19-79 of the county code, which concern an exclusion zone at Crab Island. We could not confirm whether it was adopted, so call the county before you rely on any zone.
For emergencies call 911. For non-urgent incidents the county lists the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office at (850) 651-7400. Rules also change, so check the county's waterway safety page before the season.
Alcohol and boating
Boating under the influence is a crime in Florida. Under s. 327.35, an operator is over the limit at a blood or breath alcohol level of 0.08 or more, and can also be convicted if alcohol impairs normal faculties regardless of the test result. A first offense carries a fine of $500 to $1,000 and up to six months in jail, among other penalties. The easy solution on a day at the sandbar is to name a sober operator before the first drink.
Safety checklist
- Run at idle or slow speed in the busy approach; Florida allows idle-speed and slow-speed zones near ramps and fuel docks, and the 500-foot and 300-foot distances in s. 327.46 are measured from ramps and similar facilities.
- Carry a wearable life jacket for every person; see Coast Guard approved life jackets.
- Do not tow tubes or watersports through the crowd; see boat tubing safety.
- Use a VHF radio or phone you can reach in the bay, and know your position; see VHF marine radio basics.
- Check the weather before leaving; afternoon storms build quickly on the Panhandle in summer. See special marine warning vs small craft advisory.
- Carry out all trash, and do not feed or chase wildlife.
